So Where Does Improvisation Fit Within The Context Of Composition?

Only tangentially!

For me, not too much. I play around with the keys, find something. Boom!

A great means(udders) to ideas(Milk) to be developed,or if you are Keith Jarrett-an end in itself. Both are valid, but i'm more in resonance with the first.Personaly, i think Corea is a better Composer then Jarrett.

Improv gives a superfluous satisfaction. Composition is a quite different psychic activity, much deeper, much more concentration. When improv, I'm using tools. When compose, I'm working on myself.

The spark is not the result!

I'm more of this mind - I hardly ever improvise as I don't play an instrument much anymore. But I like it when I do. However composition for me always has a conceptual basis that improv (when I do it) lacks.

But that is 'making' - when I listen I often enjoy improv (and composition of course)

to me composition is really improvisation in geologic time with the ability to alter the past, present and future at will...
