Critique yourself: Here's a tool 4 Replies

Here is a tag-based method that can be used to analyze/critique any piece of music. The method is easy to use; so members could use it to critique their own compositions. Should be worth a try! See...

and Rilke again:
Nothing touches a work of art so little as words of criticism : they always result in more or less fortunate misunderstandings. Things aren’t all so tangible and sayable as people would usually have us believe; most experiences are unsayable, they happen in a space that no word has ever entered, and more unsayable than all other things are works of art, those mysterious existences, whose life endures beside our own small, transitory life.

I'm back, but I have no intention of contributing to anything which is going to produce dismissive responses or hostility. New Rule, as Adam suggested.

1. The person starting a thread about the piece, needs to say what types of feedback they're looking for. I assumed wrongly, and the comments below suggest, that you guys were looking for dissection. If there's going to be hard feelings I'll delete the threads myself.

2. If you don't like a critique, too bad. But it is bad manners to just say it's bad. You have to explain it. People who continue to be dismissive will be banned. Polite disagreements, say why yo thought it was a bad critique, are welcome.

3. Praise, whatever, but don't pretend it is a critique. I've deleted the Praise group.

4. Let's start again, but I will delete this group at the next sign of trouble.

Well, when the creator of this site resigns from this group and basically declares this group a fraud, the future of this group is doubtful!

One more rule (and we'll take it very seriously from now on):
ONLY critique, NO praise!

So, the rules here:
Join the group and start a discussion for the piece you want to be criticized. (we'll come and dissect it :) )

You're right J.C.! From now on, let's do that!

I think this music in itself (without the context it was created for) is a bit vague... Also, feels a bit 'cold', a not fully understandable background to a sad story, something like that...
Sometimes a bit redundant, too, but there are good moments, when new things are introduced.
Sounds 'professional'.

Here's an electronic work for Winifred R. Harris' Between Lines: "If I Stopped, Would You Notice?" (1997):

Thanks for your input Steve. The description is very difficult not to be academic as it is my MA project. I'm glad you said fun because that's it's intention, to be relatively lighthearted and juxtapose some of the more serious issues; industrial slaughter houses, farmer exploitation, third world labor, etc which will be presented alongside the audio in a short film. I'm aware there's a long way to go! cheers.

I dunno David...that description you supplied is really 'academic', I guess you had no choice. The sound collage you supplied is nothing more : Fun to listen to but not any where close to the 'academic' polemic you supplied.
