I've been listening to John Adam's
Doctor Atomic. The harmony is grey, driven by ostinati. The orchestration is effective but not colorful. The story doesn't grab me. It may be a brilliant piece, an example of what Messiaen would call a "dark" masterpiece. I may be blinded by sour grapes from not getting the same opportunity to premiere a large work in a major center but yet, I'm bored.
