So Where Does Improvisation Fit Within The Context Of Composition?

My experience of improvisation is very much like composition. The major exception is that there is no going back. Once it's played, it's part of the work. When I improvise with Telescope, the other p…

Well, since we're also just subjective superpositions, maybe it's all the same? Aynne, I think you hit it for me there... we set out with an intention, a structure, then let go of it- and the organic takes over. (Oh no! Poetic Wax Alert!) Art, lik…

This is fun. We even all seem to have different perspectives on "formal", "structures" and "control". Steve, you really kicked up a cool nest here! I'm currently confronting how to have my physical space (living and creative shared) be a structure…

Thanks for acknowledging my question... I was actually looking at the temporary space which eludes control structures... is there art beyond that space. If I'm understanding the distinction, "control structures", my question is, can we find art, can…

It's a pleasure to join you here... (good ol' TAZ.) I guess first we need to identify the depth of our formal structures of control. I suspect we have to be able to know them to elude them? I'm looking forward to the inquiry, and to see if there is…

Hi- also new here... My duo, Telescope, uses an Electrix Repeater and two Electro-Harmonix 2880's.... We've considered trying out Ableton Live or something else, but what we immediately run up against is the factor of one mouse versus 10 fingers...…

I am so glad this group exists... My duo, Telescope, is all about live looping. One member, me, plays keyboards, and the other, Van Alpert, plays the looping machines (one Electrix Repeater and two Electro-Harmonix 2880's, along with a bank of "tune…

Bernie,

Thanks for your comments! I would love to hear your duo if you ever make it up to the SF Bay Area. The L.A. basin is hard on my asthma.

Thanks for the info on Jose's Ning site. I will check it out.

I know not everyone will like my music - that's true anywhere and for all musicians. But, what bothers me is when there is an implication that membership is open when in practice it is not. Since I have been involved in many online groups over the years, including on the hosting side, I have come to find out that most profess more openness than they can actually live up to. Full participation is almost always limited to individuals who fit into the prevailing expectations, even though most of those are undisclosed.

Lately, I've been too preoccupied with a health crisis in my family to pursue participation here any further but, so far, I don't feel I'm missing much. I'm pretty stubborn, though, so I'll probably be back. :)

Happy Hour is cool! When I read how you and your partner in Telescope work together, I was curious... would love to see you perform live sometime. Glad I found your music through the live looping thread. :)

Hi Bernie, not sure I agree with Jeff on this one (must be a bug somewhere). It will look a little strange if you have no friends on your profile. Why don't you send me a request and I'll confirm it to get the ball rolling?
