That's pretty cool! I was wondering how you could survive in a small college town like Hattiesburg.

An update about this project... Now that I'm moving back to NY, my friend Mark Lungershausen, who was my accompanist for both my bachelor's and master's degree recitals at Fredonia, is going to work with me on the above pieces. A few steps away f...

Middletown is lucky to get you. Support for music must be strong there... Not so here in SoCal, and that is a shame. Good luck.

Back in the saddle

Transitions are never easy. I guess that's why they're the most interesting parts of musical compositions. Transitioning back into professional mode from being a student is taking some getting used to. I now have approximately 200 students for whom I am responsible. The move back to NY was not fun. Lots of issues with getting our things, timing, orientations at school, etc. I'm just glad that everything is back up and running, and that I finally have cable and Internet access at home! Tomorrow i… Continue

New Beginnings

Well, it's been a rough few months, but I'm happy to be moving back to New York to begin my new job as a music teacher at Middletown High School. I will be teaching music theory (which I minored in at Southern Miss) and guitar class (an instrument from my youth that I used to find so much enjoyment in playing). This new job and resulting move also brings my family closer together, as my wife's family will be approximately an hour and a half to our west, and my family will be about two and a half… Continue

Recording???

So I've been thinking about a recording project for some time now. This is something that will happen in the near future, possibly in the next few years. However, I'd like to be a little different from many of the saxophone recordings that have been made that find their home in my CD library. I don't think ANOTHER recording of Paul Creston's Sonata, or Alfred Desenclos' Prelude, Cadence et Finale would benefit either myself, or the consumer public. Not to mention that costs for recording… Continue

Graduatin & job searching

Well I would just like the NNM community to know that I am graduating in 3 weeks from The University of Southern Mississippi with my Doctor of Musical Arts degree. I successfully defended my dissertation about the Saxophone Concertino of Polish composer Roman Palester about a month ago, and I'm really looking forward to finding a full-time teaching position. Even in these troubling economic times, I am still hopeful that there is a job for me out there somewhere. I've been applying at many diffe… Continue

Theory = Frightening?

As a student of music theory, I was always fascinated by how the various parts of a piece of music came together to form a coherent whole. The three basic elements of melody, harmony, and rhythm, combined with form, always intrigued me; so much so, that as a graduate student pursuing a performance degree, I opted to minor in theory to broaden my horizons a bit. Now that I'm completing my doctoral studies in performance and pedagogy with a minor in theory, I can't help but be frustrated at the un… Continue

Hey there. Got my DMA in Flute at USM in '95. It was the greatest time of my life. Loved H'burg and made some good friends there. When do you finish? Seems like it takes forever until it is over, then you wonder where it all went so fast. Wish you well, man.

Hi, Brian.

I don't know most of the composers you mention in your reply, but am always open to fresh discoveries.

Do you have access to a recording studio? An accompanist or ensemble? If yes, you might want to connect with our fairly extensive international network of composers. They might be interested in writing for sax in the foreseeable future. Most are tonal composers, but some create both tonal and non-tonal music, from the ultra-traditional to the outer limits. We hold annual Web-based virtual festivals showcasing new art music--the first of their kind.

Best,

Joe

Hi, Brian.

I haven't written anything for sax yet but am always interested in exploring unfamiliar musical territory. What styles/forms of music are you or sax players you know particularly interested in? I ask because my composer friends and colleagues cover a broad spectrum of tonal art music, and some of us also are into non-tonal and electronic media.

Best,

Joe

Hi, No, I haven't written a piece for sax yet. I'd love to write one. Do you specialize in one, or do you play them all?

Hi Brian,
Glad to be here
I´m looking for a way to add my mp3s to the internet
I have composed about 700 original music pieces from 10 sek to 26 min long,
Do you know some place ?
On Myspace you can only have four pieces,
I need to have 696 more:)

Hi Brian. When I saw Hattiesburg, I just knew you had to know Everette Minchew! Enjoying your playing, and hoping you let us in on whatever concerts come up over your way.
