as beautiful as a crescent of a new moon on a cloudless spring evening (2004)
[string quartet, 30 minutes]

One day after dinner, Morton was sitting at the kitchen table having a taste of water, thinking about a carpet or two, when electricity discontinued. Sun set and awareness gradually changed to wonder as he saw the beauty of the crescent of a new moon on a cloudless spring evening passing by the windows.

Many years later, Morton awoke on his couch from an afternoon nap. Venus, the cat, leapt off the window where she was sleeping permitting sunlight to pass through a glass reclining on a table. "That is" he thought, "as beautiful as a crescent of a new moon on a cloudless spring evening".

This piece is tuned to the system known as Just Intonation, rational intervals from the harmonic series.

I'm taking a bit of time off from playing because I broke both of my elbows on August 12th. I didn't see where I was walking and I fell...Fate letting me know I should be spending more time composing, so I'm dreaming guitar solos and thinking about ratios for now.

Michael Harrison's Revelation

Back when I was learning about Just Intonation and microtones, I went out of my way to get to know composers in the NYC area who were working with these tuning systems. One of them was Michael Harrison and I took a number of Raga classes with him and his guru Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan. This was about 1999-2001.

Even though I’d heard Michael play Just Intonation piano a few times in concert, it wasn’t until October 2007 when I heard him perform his piano piece Revelation at the Chelsea Art Muse

Frank Zappa had an important part in my evolution as a composer. By the time he passed on, I was really just interested in his instrumental computer and concert music. Inspired by his Synclavier computer music like Jazz From Hell and concert music like the Yellow Shark, I was… Continue

Eno, Warhol and video

When I first saw Brian Eno's video paintings, I was amazed. He set a video camera on a window, turned it on, then processed the video with a malfunctioning piece of equipment. Later I found out that Andy Warhol did something similar a few years before and Eno improved on an interesting idea.

Fripp loops

I could go on and on about how much influence Robert Fripps analog tape delay system Frippertronics has been on my microtonal guitar playing, but I won't. Instead, here's a video of the small mobile intelligent unit himself playing a solo over some Frippertronics.

Once and Future Cows

I should be working on composition, but I do spend a lot of time listening. Recently I was listening to my pile of Fred Frith/Henry Cow albums and looking for video on the net. This free non-idiomatic improvisation is from three Henry Cow members (Fred Frith, Chris Cutler & Tim Hodgkinson), recorded live at The Stone, New York. Dec. 16, 2006.

Enjoy...I did.
