Greg - dial-up, huh? That would drive me nuts. ("Some say this has already happened.") Movie Marvin is not nearly as bad as Movie Zaphod's second head. I'm sure they saved millions of dollars by n...

Steve, I hope that's not what you think I said - because it's not what I said or what I meant or what I believe. Let me try again. Given my bad attitude about "new" music - or whatever we care to...

Rain Random

Rain Random is a two-minute music composition with video images. The images are of rain. The piece is very cold and wet. Very empty. Like waiting for a bus on a street corner where there is no bus shelter without a raincoat during a huge rainstorm and everything around you just gets more blurred and dismal. More wet. More soaked. Please enjoy Rain Random.

The Tradition of Improvised and Experimental Music in Los Angeles

No musician admits it out loud and a few probably don't even admit it to themselves, but every musician wants to get into the history books. I've seen composers open a new book from the back just to look for their name in the index. I do that myself sometimes.

I'm very proud that I got mentioned even once in Frank Zappa's autobiography. (On page 175 in case you run across a copy because Frank didn't believe in indices.)

Recently I was contacted by Charles Sharp (also known as… Continue

The Ocker Scale

This piece is nearly 2 years old. I remember, back then, that I still wanted to change some things about it. So I flagged it in my mind as "unfinished".

Now, however, I can't remember what I wanted to change. And since it was written in an earlier version of Sibelius I imagine that working on it again would require more remedial effort than I'm willing to expend.

So, here it is, just as it was when I left it.… Continue

Dear David,
I found your article "The Musical Times Of Francesco Zappa" on http://wiki.killuglyradio.com/wiki/Francesco_Zappa where you're closing line reads "...Maybe we'll even find a way of liberating some of Francesco Zappa's symphonies from the reallydusty libraries in Europe. But don't worry, we'll do something."

May I draw your attention to the recently launched album by the New Dutch Academy (NDA) partly dedicated to Francesco Zappa? We're going to promote his symphonic works not only for the Dutch audience. Would you know of ways whereby we can successfully make the US people aware of this phenomenon?

Thanks and best wishes!

I am loving 'eating the desicant', I now play it with the random button on to test your theory on order. Of course you were right! I love the format of you reading out the title at the beggining of each piece.
On a seperate point;
I heard a Zappa interview the other day where he mentioned creating harmonies out of rhythums, the interviewer was unable to get Zappa to ellaborate on details I was wondering whether you could shed light on what he meant.

I'm really pleased you liked the golden rule (as you know I am a fan of yours wagner and schubert' sits in my cd collection with the art work you provided), the pieces are probably not performable by humans as the scores are a bit cluttered and even if I sorted them out I don't know that the mixture of timings would be performable. I'd love to find out though!

I do think the next one in the series should indeed be "Poof! You're A Prostitute". Not only will quite a number of work-for-hire composers relate appreciatively to this from personal experience, but it will help with your website hits and fan base building. You'll lure unsuspecting folks who were simply trolling for sex, into our seedy world of new music. Talk about audience development!

Heck, if I were better at marketing myself, I would spell my website URL "www.alexxxshapiro.org" ! just think of all the traffic I'd get!
Then again, just think how utterly disappointed the visitors would be when they see how I'm wearing way too many clothes in all the photos. It could backfire, and send them immediately clicking over to your Pimp/Prostitute webpage....
