Peace.
Good to hear from you!
Consemble is an online project in which people contribute their sounds. The idea is that people listen to the current Consembles and then send the sounds they think ought to be included. Every time the Consembles are played they are different as the sounds are chosen randomly.
General information is at http://www.chameleonlectra.co.uk/Consemble.html
I have also sent you a message to your inbox about this.
I'd love to have a contribution from you!
all the best,
Paul
Thanks for the add!
I appreciate that!
Hope you have a good week,
Chris
One day, I fired up a midi orchestral plugin I had and suddenly ideas started coming up in my head for entire symphonies. While no masterpieces, some of those embryonic ideas are still very valid when I listen to a year later. It just seemed to me that once I could count on a set of "canonized sounds" my creativity was more free to compose rather than try to reproduce an electronic sound in my head.
As you pointed out though, there are severe limits to what a MIDI setup can do. But I believe most of them are not so much in the intrinsic quality of them, but in the fact that to make them sound realistic you need an incredible amount of time and effort. As you pointed out, the joints are the biggest issue. I have been able to create almost flawless solos for viola, but 8 bars took me almost the entire day. I don't have that kind of time when my daughter can play the same part in 10 seconds.
However, I have to say one thing in MIDI's defense: When else ion history a hack like me could write an orchestral piece and be able to listen to it soon after?
The other thing is that while my written composition skills are non existent I do have musical ideas (valid or not) and MIDI allows me to realize them where otherwise if I had to write them with pen and paper, a) I would never be able to listen to the way it sounds and b) I am just not that good that I can write orchestrations without hearing them. It is a hobby. As such, my goal is to enjoy myself but that doesn't mean that I don't want to improve at it either :)
Thanks again. I am looking forward to hearing more of your music and don't feel like you have to respond to every post.
Cheers
Personally, I listen to Philip Glass more than any other composer these days, but my Ipod also has a lot of Faure, Sibelius and a few others.
My own creative process is much more "hit and miss" mostly because my music knowledge is limited to two years of conservatory (Classical guitar) back in the 1970's and what I have learned from various sources over the years. Not last the fact that my own daughter is first viola at the UC Berkeley Orchestra and she has a lot of material I can access.
Will listen to your music and comment...
Best wishes of creativity and inspiration,
Chris
I am working on trying to finish the 5 or 6 pieces I am working on, but I am getting more and more frustrated with both the limitations of my MIDI orchestral setup and my own (my own being the most frustrating I suppose).
It would be great if you could write a bit about your creative and technical process. You are obviously a very advanced composer and I think we can all learn from you.
Good luck and I am looking forward to hearing more of your music.
