Rethinking Music Theory

I’ve been teaching a theory/beginning composition course at RPI for the past two years. The students are primarily engineering students. About half of them play an instrument and play in a classical group. Another quarter play guitar or some other rock-oriented instrument. The rest don’t play anything at all, but “like music.” Their levels of music fundamentals run the gamut, from those who know it inside out, to others who don’t even know where to put the stems on notes. Most of them are pretty… Continue

Bye bye Mauricio

I'm really sad to hear of Mauricio Kagel's death, a loss of one of the gentler composers of his generation. I knew of him before I lived in Köln, of course, but got to experience him and his influence while there. Almost every composer in Köln studied with him at the Hochschule at some time. Countless students of his have bandoneons. ;-) And he was so supportive of his students. Actually quite a nice summer Mary Jane. Thanks for the positive wish. I am out of New York CIty! :-) Of course I'm not in real country like where you are, but just north of Chicago, at my mother's house near Ravinia, which I'm supposedly trying to get organized and cleared out. It is wonderful to be out of NYC.

Hi Mary Jane - thought I would pop by and have a listen. The Crane Dance is outstanding - very haunting and beautifully performed.

Hi May Jane: great to hear from you. Right now I am in Budapest, on research leave from my University, the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. I'll be back there on August 15th. meanwhile, I am composing here and by the Lake Balaton, where we have a nice place. How about you?!

Hi Mary Jane

Thanks for the great news. It is a pity that your place is that far from here.

Hi Mary Jane

Had a very odd dream last night. In it, a voice on my television kept saying you were going to appear on the Late Show With David Letterman. A good omen? Get some funny composition stories ready ...

Hope you are well.
