Sound and (imaginary) Space

A while back the composer Jakob Goetz sent me a sketch for a new electronic piece that he was working on and the subtle treatment of space in the composition got me thinking on the topic of space in composition nowadays and how it (the (electronic) creation of the illusion of various “spaces” ) in many ways has taken over the role played by harmony in traditional music composition.

Below some extracts from our correspondence:

The whole question of space makes me think a lot about painti… Continue

Lydfabet

The Lydfabet (Lyd=sound in Danish) is a recently completed sound-poetry piece in which one travels through the (Danish) alphabet within a quarter of an hour. It is based on a series of short poems created specially for the project by the Danish author and poet Vagn Steen. Vagn was one of the first Danish poets to use a computer in piecing together a poem during the sixties and I was inspired by this and his extensive catalogue of concrete poetry to make some explorations in sound.

Sympathetic Vibrations. I remember a cello lesson I had as a child in which I was particularly fascinated with how a string on the cello would vibrate seemingly all by itself, when in tune with the same note played on another cello. Later I found out that there was a term for this acoustic phenomenon - sympathetic vibration. Space & Electronics. At the time I was also more interested in building electronic oscillators than practising my cello scales. I was particularly fascinated with the way in which different objects in the room could be made to vibrate as I tuned the oscillator to different frequencies. Records & Radio. My parents owned a Deutsche Gramophone recording of Beethoven’s fifth piano concerto which I loved to listen to while constructing my electronic circuits. Later I was given an old radio by an aunt and the whole world of popular music flowed in through its loudspeaker and shook up my room. I gave up the dream of building my own synthesizer, bought one and started making music with it...

Hi Adam - thanks for that link - didn't know it and found it quite interesting - I guess it reflects how our attention has shifted from coming up with new material to finding ways of navigating through all that we now have access to. (The Glassma...

Hi Rudiger, and belated thanks for your comment from April! I haven't found enough time to investigate this site thoroughly, and frequently miss things, even on my own profile.

I've enjoyed hearing your music, especially TPK Darlings and Lydfabet. Always beautiful sounds and intriguing continuities. (I wonder how a Dane would hear Lydfabet? Not "understanding" anything but the letter names might enhance the musical quality of the spoken sounds for the Danish-impaired.)

Hello again Rudiger, just to let you know that there is now space for just six more sounds in 'the idea of voice' Consemble before it is complete and I would very much like to include excerpts from Lydfabet if possible. All the best, Paul

Hello Rudiger,
I run a sound art/music project called Consemble and wondered if you would be interested in taking part? More information (and some pieces to listen to) starting at www.chameleonlectra.co.uk/Consemble.html
Questions and/or feedback very welcome. It would be great to have a contribution from you - perhaps some cello or electronics?
all the best,
Paul
