About The Music On My Page

The Madcap Laughed was composed at the request of cellist Esther Rogers whose performance was recorded at the SCOR! music festival in Rochester, NY. The piece is a humble tribute to Pink Floyd founder, Syd Barret.

The Bachelor Descends uses recorded audio from numbers stations as well as an old, old recording of my grandfather singing a torch song as source material.

Wasted Youth (With Silence) is a goofy little piece written for the New England 60x60 project. The idea behind the project is to match 60 musical pieces with 60 videos; ultimately the audience participates by selecting which video/music pieces get paired. This project is part of the Vox Novus 60x60 series.

Shibuya Crossing was composed at the request of Herve Zenouda for a CD he released called Post Minimalism 4 countries 19 composers. The music consists of digitally altered electric guitars.

Gretel was composed at the request of oboist Charles Huang. This performance features Bill Solomon on vibraphone and Daren Weissfisch on oboe.

It certainly does not make you anti-intellectual. It makes you someone who seeks a balance of human experience.

Shibuya Crossing is lovely and sensuous. It's sad, but many of my fellow composers would consider those adjectives attached to their music to be insulting. Such are the limiting orthodoxies, prejudices and odd presuppositions of our time. I hope you are not insulted. I enjoyed the piece thoroughly. Much for the gut and the intellect.

Hey, Tom. Thanks for the nice words. The other movements of the Horn Sonata are more rhythmic and straight forward. I would love to get someone to perform it, but you know how that goes. The Clarinet Sonata was written for a friend who performed it on a faculty recital at Louisiana Tech. It has a more lyric first movement. The second movement is a drawn out slow piece in memory of a friend who was an organist. There is a reference to the hymn tune Hyfrydol in the middle.

Lately I've been absorbed with some concert band pieces. Got a reading of one by a fine high school band last week. The other piece is too hard to just read. I'm shopping it out to college band director friends. On the other hand, large ensemble pieces take so much time for all the detailed score work. I'm ready to do some more work with smaller forces and hopefully a bit edgier material.

As for your pieces, send them on. johnwgoss@gmail.com is the best one to send files. I'll be watching for them.

Hey, Alphonse, I'd love to take a look at Gretel. Some of it might be a stretch for me technically, but it never hurts to stretch a bit. And I know several percussionists who would really get a kick out of it. I like the unfolding of the piece... the gradual drawing in... the unabashed play... the contrasts of peace and fireworks. (BTW, I'm also a flutist if you have anything for it.)

Your website is really well done, as is your music. Being an oboist, I was certainly drawn to Gretel. Wonderful. Also, followed your link to MyScoreStore.com. Are you getting any response there? Looks promising.

Anyway, I did enjoy listening to your work.

Alphonse: I enjoyed the music. "Shibuya Crossing," very ambient, some nice harmonic elements that contrast, some barely audible elements which appear & fade..."Ground": I'd like to hear some more of this. Judging from your interest in my interest in tuning, I bet you play harpsichord. Gretel: Wow, real instruments! Nice. Yeppir
